「濱口竜介的劇本是一首自我揭示的絢麗詠嘆調，呈現了豐富又充滿戲劇性的對峙；一連串緊迫的特寫和讓人激動的全景鏡頭構成了他引人注目的視覺美學，冷靜而果斷的演員們不僅填滿了大銀幕，也填滿了整座城市。

《暗湧情事》是濱口竜介在東京藝術大學的畢業作品，更為他日後享譽國際的電影作品奠定了基礎。
此時，29歲的濱口已開始探索當代疏離感和無法實現的慾望等主題，並開始啟用了與演員占部房子等人的長久合作（在他之後的作品中，皆可陸續看到他們身影）。
《暗湧情事》豐富而細膩地解剖21世紀關係的源頭，在一場又一場的對話中，情感猶疑未定的都會男女，宛如卡薩維蒂的《面孔》，不斷用繁複的言語互相試探、交鋒，濱口將這些角色的反省和關係瓦解注入了充滿情感的清晰度，每個部分都將劇情推往令人驚訝的方向發展，最終更以震撼的結局達到故事高潮。
