第二次世界大戰後，日本人山本幡男（二宮和也飾）被囚禁在蘇聯西伯利亞的戰俘營，儘管環境極其嚴酷且遭受非人道待遇，但為了能回到日本與妻子、兒女重聚，他仍奮力求生，向其他戰俘訴說自己的信念：「不要放棄生存的希望，回國的日子一定會來的。
」改編自日本作家邊見純同名紀實文學《來自收容所的遺書》，重現二戰戰俘真實故事。
日本影帝二宮和也領銜主演，攜手北川景子、松坂桃李、中島健人等一線影星共同演出。
在極端的環境中仍奮力求生，即便身處牢籠也不放棄信念，奮力於群體中散布希望與愛。
第二次世界大戰結束後，約有60萬日本人被強制送往西伯利亞的戰俘營進行勞改。
在極度殘酷的日子裡，每個人都陷入絕望之中，只有一個人，他從未放棄生存的希望，那就是山本幡男，他拚盡全力，在環境惡劣的戰俘營掙扎求生。
在糧食匱乏的戰俘營中，許多人死於營養不良或選擇自殺，同時面臨蘇聯軍方的不人道對待、日本戰俘內部的階級欺凌，還有西伯利亞嚴苛氣候環境，然而山本依舊懷抱著希望並鼓勵同伴不要放棄，宣揚著跨越國別與族群界間的生存信念，只願再見到心愛的妻子與兒女一面。
